5 REASONS TO BECOME AN OFFICIAL

5 REASONS
01
STAY ACTIVE
Being an official gives you the opportunity to engage in physical activity. Officials can work several nights a week which will keep you active and moving on the court.
02
LOVE FOR THE GAME
Most officials played basketball at some level in their lives and are passionate about the game. Being an official will keep you involved in the game you love and close to the action.
03
GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY
Officiating is a great way to give back to the community. Our officials provide a service to schools and the players on school teams. Members also volunteer their time at community events.
04
EARN EXTRA MONEY
Need a flexible, part-time hustle? Officiating is a great way to help pay your way through school and to earn extra income.
05
COMMUNITY & FELLOWSHIP
Officiating gives you the chance to meet a diverse group of people who you may not meet otherwise. On and off the court, officials support each other and build long-lasting friendships.

2023-2024 UIL Fees are Varsity $80, Sub-Varsity $65, Middle School $55 plus Mileage.  Mileage will depend on school location and the center point of CTXBOA.

Texas does not have any formal certification process. The Texas Association of Sports Officials (TASO) & University Interscholastic League (UIL) empowers local chapters to train and qualify officials to officiate basketball at the high school and middle school level.

There are two dues, one is the State Dues which are paid directly to TASO and then your  local dues which are paid directly to CenTex BOA (CTXBOA). Officials must first register with TASO at https://www.intra-focus.com/MANAGER/registration/step1.cfm.  After registering with TASO you will be contacted by CTXBOA to register with us as your local Chapter. Your local dues to CTXBOA are $40 annually. Uniform costs typically include a starter package for approximately $165 that includes a shirt, shoes, pants and whistle. There are many online sites for official supplies.  CTXBOA will also have vendors at our first few meetings each season where you can purchase officials’ gear.

In most cases the school district pays you directly. Usually it takes a school about 30 days from the time you worked the game until you get your game fee deposited or check in the mail. Most school districts do pay by direct deposit.

Our chapter provides excellent training. We have veteran officials that will work with new members well before the season starts. We also have a mentor program that allows new members to ask questions of veteran officials throughout the season.
The amount of games worked depends on you and the flexibility of your schedule.
